Players to Watch

Portland Timbers

Diego Valeri, M: Valeri has nine goals and six assists this season. His goal total ranks fifth in MLS this year. He has recorded a goal or an assist in four of the last five games. Valeri has been Portland’s most important player in the attack since joining the club in 2013. Valeri is capable of creating dangerous opportunities and finding goals in key moments for the Timbers.

Fanendo Adi, F: Adi netted his club record 50th career goal for the Timbers last week as Portland drew Seattle 2-2 at home. Adi has nine goals and two assists in 17 starts this year. Adi is a proven MLS goal scorer, who netted 16 goals for Portland in both 2015 and 2016. Against a stingy Sporting Kansas City back line, the Timbers will look to Adi to find the back of the net.

Roy Miller, D: Miller is expected to return to the field in Kansas City after serving a one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation. The Timbers have struggled on defense in recent weeks and the back line will need to step up in Kansas City if they hope to get a result against a strong SKC team. Portland will look to Miller to bring consistency to the field in Kansas City.

Sporting Kansas City

Ike Opara, D: Opara has been part of one of the best center back pairings in MLS this season. With Opara helping to lead the way Kansas City has conceded just 12 goals this season, which ranks first in MLS. Opara also has two goals this season and scored a goal with a fabulous bicycle kick against Los Angeles last week.

Roger Espinoza, M: Espinoza scored a goal to help lead Sporting Kansas City to a 2-1 win over the Galaxy last week. Espinoza now has a goal and two assists this season. Espinoza is a hard working central midfielder with the ability to provide defensive cover for SKC and also contribute goals and assists when needed.

Gerso Fernandes, F: Fernandes joined SKC this season and has made an immediate impact in the attack. He leads Sporting Kansas City with six goals this season. He also recorded an assist to help lead SKC to a 2-1 win over the Galaxy last week. Fernandes is a quick and dynamic winger that will look to cause problems for Portland’s back line Saturday.
